IN PLAIN WORDS
First, the simple explanation.
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans, fills and seals the canal system.
Before you decideWhy might a root canal be needed? What happens during treatment? After treatment
01 / WHY MIGHT A ROOT CANAL BE NEEDED?
Why might a root canal be needed?
Deep decay, cracks, trauma or other damage can inflame or infect the dental pulp. Symptoms may include lingering sensitivity, pain on biting, swelling or sometimes no obvious symptoms. Diagnosis requires examination and often dental X-rays.
02 / WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?
What happens during treatment?
The dentist numbs the area, accesses the pulp chamber, removes diseased tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, then fills and seals them. A temporary restoration may be used between visits. A crown may be recommended when the remaining tooth is weakened.
03 / AFTER TREATMENT
After treatment
Some tenderness can occur for a short period. Follow-up and a durable final restoration are important. Contact the clinic if pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Three things to ask your dentist.
01 / UNDERSTAND
Why do I need this treatment?
Ask what the dentist has found, what the treatment is expected to help with and what may happen if you wait.
02 / COMPARE
Are there other choices?
Ask whether there is another way to treat the problem. Your dentist should explain the good points and limits of each suitable option.
03 / PLAN
What will it cost in total?
Ask what is included, whether more than one visit is needed and whether medicines, scans, lab work or follow-up visits cost extra.
04 / AFTERCARE
What should I expect afterwards?
Ask how to care for your teeth, how long recovery may take and who to contact if something does not feel right.
Your treatment is personal. This guide helps you prepare. Your dentist will check your teeth and explain the options that fit your needs before you make a decision.
